Periwinkle Lace Infinity Scarf

Happy Easter!
This long, narrow, periwinkle scarf is beautiful for a spring day. The soft color paired with the lacy pattern will give a pop of color to your outfit.
I used one skein of Patons Lace Sequin in Pale Blue with size 7 needles.
Co 30, long tail
Row 1 and all ws rows: p
Row 2: *k2, yo, k1, k2tog, k2tog, k1, yo, k2* repeat across
Row 4: *k3, yo, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k3* repeat across
Row 6: *k2tog, k1, yo, k4, yo, k1, k2tog* repeat across
Row 8: *k2tog, yo, k6, yo, k2tog* repeat across
Repeat rows 1-8, ending on a row 1. Bo loosely in knit.
Seam the ends together. Weave in ends.
Here is the simple lace pattern. The sequins really add a great sparkle. My finished scarf is about 7"x 95". If you would like to make this scarf wider, simply add a multiple of ten. Some people have asked me about the edges curling in, so you could also add maybe two stitches to either side for a garter stitch border.

  1. This is so pretty and feminine. I'm not a very experienced knitter but I really want to try this pattern. Thank you for sharing your talents.

    1. Thank you! Once you learn the basic increases and decreases this pattern will be a breeze!

    2. how many times do you repeat rows 1-8

    3. Repeat until the desired length. I continued until it was 95".

  2. This is so pretty! I love the shade of blue. Lace knitting is one of my favorite things to do. Thanks for sharing the pattern - pinning.

  3. I have never done lace knitting. I bought some pretty pink self-striping yarn. Do you think it would work for a lace pattern like this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it would work, as long as you don't mind the color changes in the lace pattern. I tend to avoid striping and variegated yarns because I don't know how they'll affect the pattern.

    2. Thank you. I am making this for my 16 year old with yarn she picked out. The picture here looks wider than mine. Is it because I'm not using worsted weight? Should I increase the number of stitches? Also, I've never made an infinity scarf before so how long should I make it before sewing it together? Thanks for your help.

    3. My scarf is 7" wide. I used a lace weight yarn with size 7 needles. If you want to make it wider, just add multiples of 10. This scarf was 95" when I finished but it depends how long you want it. This one wraps three times, but in will do ones as short as 60" to wrap twice. You can hold it up as you go to see what length you like best.

  5. Hi, i am a beginner in the knitting craft and really want to knit this beautiful scarf, but i have a silly question. Is the row 1 P is for Plain or Purl?
Thank you for this stunning pattern.

  6. HI there,

Great scarf. Can you tell me what Bo means? Since I have arthritis in my neck, this looks like a great scarf, warm and elegant.

Thank you for sharing your design.

  7. I'm looking forward to knitting this. What does ws mean?

    1. Ws means wrong side. This would be the bumpy side.

  8. So far I'm loving this pattern. I found a pretty lavender sparkly yarn that's turning out very nicely. I have one question though: the edges of my scarf are curling in! I'm ending up with more of a skinny rolled tube. I think it'll still look nice when worn, but I'm not sure why it's happening when it doesn't look (from the photos) like you had that problem. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

    1. Mine curls up too. If you think it's curling too much, you could try going up a size with the needles. You could also try blocking it after the scarf is finished.

  9. how could I change and use the pattern for a circular needle?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you mean making an infinity scarf, cast on a multiple of ten, join, and knit all odd rows. For the even rows, they would be the same.

      Delete
    2. Thank you very much I would like it to be an infinity without having to do any stitching together of ends which I have no clue how to do yet . I am assuming if I cast on 120 stiches I should be ok for the length?

      Delete
    3. For 120 stitches, it would most likely only wrap once, and I think that would be a nice cowl.

      Delete
  10. how many stitches would you suggest for using circular needles for a double wrap

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would say somewhere between 250 and 300, depending on how long you want it to hang with a double wrap. Each repeat is 10 stitches.

  11. Hello! I've just started making this scarf, and I'm wondering how to seam the ends together & weave in the ends? I'm assuming a tapestry needle that I use for worsted/bulky weight yarns would be too big for a lace weight yarn, right? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I used one of those large plastic needles, which I also would use for a worsted or bulky yarn. I just did a simple seam together. I really like this one: http://anonyknits.blogspot.de/2006/10/seaming-better-than-you-remembered.html?m=1
Go with whatever you think looks best! With the weaving ends in, I just take the plastic needle and weave the yarn through on the back of the work, to hide it, then I cut the ends.

  12. A beautiful scarf! Just wondering how many yards you think was in your skein? I'm using a different type of yarn so I'm not sure how much to use!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This skein has 344 yards. I probably used around 340, since I had a bit left over.

    2. If you think you can't block acrylic, please go to YouTube and search the topic. There are dozens of videos on steam blocking acrylic and quite a few on how to block a hat. Years ago I found a blog on why you should and how to block acrylic. I don't have the bookmark any more but you could look for that too on google or other website search engines.

      Delete
  13. Did you block the scarf? I'm having trouble getting mine to lay flat, and I won't be able to block very much/at all since I'm using synthetic fiber (acrylic). Any suggestions? Thanks.

    1. I didn't block mine. Mine curls a lot, but when it's wrapped around the neck it doesn't seem very noticeable. I'm not really sure how to help with that, other than maybe having a garter stitch border on the sides. It sounds like you've already knit it though, so I would say just go with it!

    2. I only knit a small sample. Just recently learned to lace knit, so I'm still practicing. Thanks for your response; and for the pattern.

    3. Beautiful pattern.. Thanks.. I added 4 extra stitches and knitted 2 stitches in garter stitch at the beginning and end of each row.. It stopped the curling for me.

      Delete
    4. I also added the 2 stitches on each side stopped most of the roll. I might add this was my first attempt at a lac pattern I am very pleased with my results. I used a white lace weight yarn don't know if I could knit with th sequins in te yarn.

    5. I'm glad you like your scarf!

  14. Could you please explain how the pattern works when you caste on 30 stitches but the pattern has groups of 12 stitches. That doesn't divide evenly into thirty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Never mind. I get it now. it actually is a 6 pattern you repeat 5 times. Right?

      Delete
    2. It's three groups of ten stitches, so just three pattern repeats, but I know what you mean by six groups because of the way it reverses so the little diamonds are symmetrical.

      Delete
    3. It's a 10 stitch pattern and you do it 3x each row.

  15. I am thrilled to have found this pattern! I have this yarn, but haven't been able to find a pattern I like. I started a scarf using another pattern, but I'm going to tear it out and start over with this one!! Thanks so much!

  16. This is knitting up beautifully so far! Question though: I made a scarf with this yarn before and it stretched a ton--have you ever tried to block it and /or do you think it would help the stretching?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have blocked some projects made with this yarn. I blocked them to open up lace patterns though, so I'm not really sure about the stretching. Maybe you're knitting too loosely and should go down a needle size? Blocking might help with stretching, since it's supposed to "set" the stitches.

  17. So I am trying this pattern and it doesn't seem to Be coming out right. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. So row 2 is listed. Is row 3 the same as row 2 but in purl? What exactly would row 1 be?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rows 1 and 3, and the other odds, are just plain purl, all the way across the row. The only rows with anything to form the design are the even rows. Hopefully that will fix your problem!

    2. SMH I'm such a dork. I figured out the problem and it of course was not at all the pattern. Thank you so much for getting back to me. It was very helpful to me finding my issue. Came down to me yarning over incorrectly. Beautiful design!! Thanks again!

  18. Just a suggestion to make the pattern easier to read you should put a legend or something like that because I unfortunately don't know how to read the pattens

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Legends are usually only used for patterns that require a graft. This pattern is very well written and easy to read or to get practice reading patterns. I usually suggest to my new knitters that they write out the pattern for themselves until they get the hang of the repetitive rows. It's just 8 rows and is wonderfully easy for practice.

  19. I love this pattern! I used it to make fingerless gloves, and can't wait to make a scarf like yours - which is lovely, by the way!

  20. How would you do this on circular needles? Would it change the pattern?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since all the wrong side rows are just purled, knit them instead. There are no border stitches, so the pattern should work as is, as long as you knit the even rows.

    2. Hi Alyssa! I was wondering, if you wanted to do a longer scarf on circular needles, you advised doing 250 to 300 cast on stitches. I was wondering, for circular needles, how long would they need to be? How long would the needles be for a single round? Thanks so much for any advice!!

      Delete
    3. I would just use regular 32" or 36" circular needles.

      Delete
    4. Thanks! I had a set of 24" needles in my Amazon cart but thought I'd ask first. Not great at determining this sort of stuff yet since I've only made one beanie.

      Delete
    5. Another quick question, do you have a pattern for a matching beanie/hat that can be done on circular needles?

      Delete
    6. No, I don't have a pattern for a hat. The stitch pattern is a multiple of ten though, if you want to experiment with the pattern.

  21. Hi there, at the beginning of the pattern. it says long tail, what does that mean? x

    1. Longtail is a method of casting on. You can find a tutorial online if you don't know how to do this.

  24. I am new to knitting and and have never knit lace. I am attempting this on a small amt. of scrap yarn, and it is looking very lovely. I cannot wait to get the lace sequin yan and do it in earnest. I am very pleased, thank you so much for the pattern. If I would want to make it wider how many more stitches would Icast on?

    1. Add a multiple of ten stitches to make it wider. Maybe 40 or 50 stitches?

  25. Hi Alyssa,
I am a new knitter and I have been practicing this pattern. For some reason I seem to keep gaining stitches even though I do knit 2 together. Can you figure out what I am doing wrong? Also, where do you shop for your yarn?

I mostly shop for yarn at Michaels or A.C.Moore, but sometimes I buy yarn from KnitPicks, which is an online store.

    1. In row 2, and the other rows, the repeat starts at the asterisk. This is a ten stitch pattern repeat, so two of the stitches are yarn overs, the increases, and two of the stitches are decreases. This keeps the stitch count the same. The repeat is everything between the aterisks.

  28. You must have sewn the sequins on how long does that take....???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The sequins are actually already attached to the yarn, so no extra time!

  34. Though this might be hard for some people to do, abstaining from any drug use for 90 days might allow you to pass a hair drug test. This period would be long enough to allow your hair to outgrow the length required for the hair test. This would disqualify the affected areas of your hair, meaning they cannot serve as a sample. The other home solution is shaving yourself from head to toe because someone can't impose hair drug tests on you if you are bald. Employers might place you on probation while they wait for the hair on your head and body to grow back, which could take longer than the 90-day period that the test looks at. Bleaching can help you remove some of the drug compounds that might be ingrained in the root of your hair.
